What I’ve Been Listening To: April/May Edition

Hi everyone! Hope you’re doing well and staying safe and healthy during these strange times. It’s been a while since I’ve written a post but I’m happy to present my April/May picks for my What I’ve Been Listening To series. Read them here:

“Rumor,” Lee Brice

Lee Brice sings about taking the next step with a female friend whom he wishes was more in this sexy song about love in a small town.

Standout Lyrics: Well I can shut ’em down, tell them all they’re crazy/I can do whatever you want me to do, baby/Or you could lay one on me right now/We could really give them something to talk about

“The Bones,” Maren Morris

Country singer, Maren Morris produces a catchy, more pop-leaning track with “The Bones” and I love her for it. Seriously, I want to turn this one up every time I hear it on the radio.

Standout Lyrics: When the bones are good, the rest don’t matter/Yeah, the paint could peel, the glass could shatter/Let it rain ’cause you and I remain the same/When there ain’t a crack in the foundation/Baby, I know any storm we’re facing/Will blow right over while we stay put/The house don’t fall when the bones are good

“The Breakup Song,” Francesca Battistelli

Christian singer, Francesca Battistelli breaks up with fear on this empowering track that I play whenever I need 1) to shake off anxiety, 2) a pep talk, or 3) both.

Standout Lyrics: Fear, you don’t own me/There ain’t no room in this story/And I ain’t got time for you/Telling me what I’m not/Like you know me well guess what?/I know who I am/I know I’m strong/And I am free/Got my own identity/So fear, you will never be welcome here

“joy.,” for KING & COUNTRY

I don’t think there’s a song that currently describes my feelings better than this one. Aussie Christian duo, for KING & COUNTRY play with EDM-style beats and remind their listeners not to let worldly chaos get them down on “joy.”

Standout Lyrics: Oh, hear my prayer tonight, I’m singing to the sky/Give me strength to raise my voice, let me testify/Oh, hear my prayer tonight, ’cause this is do or die/The time has come to make a choice/And I choose joy/Let it move you, let it move you, let it move you/Yeah, I choose joy/Let it move you, let it move, let it move you

“Light On,” Maggie Roggers

I’d heard this song from Maggie Rogers a few times previously but have to credit the Netflix movie, Tall Girl for really making me dig it. Such a bop.

Standout Lyrics: Oh, if you keep reachin’ out/Then I’ll keep coming back/And if you’re gone for good/Then I’m okay with that/If you leave the light on/Then I’ll leave the light on/(Light on, light on, light on)/And I am finding out/There’s just no other way/That I’m still dancing at the end of the day/If you leave the light on/Then I’ll leave the light on/(Light on, light on, light on)

“Chasin’ You, Morgan Wallen”

I heard this tune from Morgan Wallen on my local country station during a recent car ride and I’ve been jammin’ to it ever since. Country music just hits different when you’re driving around town on a warm, sunny day, you know?

Standout Lyrics: You always used to talk about LA/I heard you got as far as Santa Fe/Oh wait, you know I tried to track you down/I only got as far as Guitar Town/Singing about a girl I used to know, used to know/Well you should know that I haven’t given up/I’m just on your radio

And those are my April/May picks. Let me know what you think of them, give them a listen on Spotify, and share what songs you’ve had on repeat while stuck in quarantine.

Until next time, keep staying safe and washing your hands and keep finding songs that help you stay sane.
