What I’ve Been Listening To: June/July Edition

It’s a new month! And I’m back with another new edition of my What I’ve Been Listening To series (also with a brand-new featured image)! Read on for my June/July music picks:

June

“Knee Deep,” Zac Brown Band featuring Jimmy Buffett

Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffett team up on this carefree tune about summer, sunshine, and ocean waves. I can’t help but pretend I’m sitting on the beach while listening to this one. (Fact: I’m usually answering work emails).

Standout Lyrics: Wrote a note said “Be back in a minute”/Bought a boat and I sailed off in it/Don’t think anybody’s gonna miss me anyway/Mind on a permanent vacation/The ocean is my only medication/Wishing my condition ain’t ever gonna go away

“Don’t Tread On Me,” We The Kingdom

We The Kingdom deliver a high-energy Christian rock song with “Don’t Tread On Me.” The group refuses to play with the devil and his twisted games.

Standout Lyrics: Get on outta here, get on up and leave/Ain’t no devil gonna tread on me/He’s choking on the blood that ran down the tree/Ain’t no devil gonna tread on me

“Like Your Love,” Jonny Diaz

Jonny Diaz sings about the wonders of God’s love on this upbeat track that always energizes me every time I hear it.

Standout Lyrics: So full of patience/So full of mercy/Invites me in though/I am unworthy/It gives me hope when/My world is shaking/Holds me together/When I am breaking

July

“Reckless Love,” Cory Asbury

Cory Asbury creates an emotional ballad with “Reckless Love.” Though I downloaded the song when it was initially released in 2018, I didn’t find myself playing it much until this year (more specifically during quarantine). I get chills when I really listen to the lyrics.

Standout Lyrics: Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God/Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine/I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away/Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah

“I Hope You’re Happy Now,” Carly Pearce featuring Lee Brice

Carly Pearce and Lee Brice pair up on this duet about a love that just didn’t work out. This one is probably my favorite country collaboration of the year.

Standout Lyrics: Who knew this heart could break this hard/Or a love like ours could fall apart/Without so much as a warning/I thought that I was what you wanted

“Hoodie,” Cassadee Pope

Cassadee Pope muses about a former flame on “Hoodie,” one of several songs from her new album, Rise and Shine (due out on August 7). Fun, catchy, relatable–this song is all three.

Standout Lyrics: Cause I found your hoodie/In my backseat/And I wore it/Still smells like you/And it’s funny/How it took me/Back to us/It’s got nothing to do with/Being in love/Wanting you back/It’s not a big deal/But boy take it as/Me just thinking/Thinking you should know that/I found your hoodie/I found your hoodie

And those are my June/July song picks. Listen to them on Spotify and let me know what songs you’ve had on repeat recently. Until next time…music on, world off.
