Now that April and May are both over, it’s time for another edition of my What I’ve Been Listening To series. Without any further delay, here are my latest round of monthly song picks:
April
“Thinking ‘Bout You,” Dustin Lynch featuring MacKenzie Porter
Country singers, Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter team up on this duet that originally featured Lauren Alaina. I wish I had something more articulate to say other than I love these two together or apart and that their voices blend so well with each other.
Standout Lyrics: I was just thinkin’ ’bout that weekend out on Cumberland Lake/And that one time in Baton Rouge when we made out in the rain/Where we went chasin’ fallin’ stars on a hill at your daddy’s farm/Don’t be sorry for callin’ me up right out of the blue/I was just thinkin’ ’bout you/I was just thinkin’ ’bout you
“Like the Dawn,” The Oh Hellos
Brother-sister duo, Tyler and Maggie Heath–also known as The Oh Hellos–deliver a beautiful and folksy re-telling of the story of Adam and Eve on their track, “Like the Dawn.” Sweet and tender, this one would make a perfect first dance song at a wedding.
Standout Lyrics: I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first/He’d put me deep, deep under so that he could work/And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook/I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you
“Hard To Forget,” Sam Hunt
Three words: total ear worm.
Standout Lyrics: You’ve got a cold heart and the cold hard truth/I got a bottle of whiskey but I’ve got no proof/That you showed up tonight in that dress/Just to mess with my head/So much for so long, out of sight, out of mind/Girl you’re looking so good, it’s driving me out of mine/Aw you’re breaking my heart/Baby you’re playing hard to forget
May
“Shape Of My Heart,” Backstreet Boys
I was reminded how much I love this childhood favorite when Devan Blake Jones recently performed his own rendition on The Voice.
Standout Lyrics: Looking back on the things I’ve done/I was trying to be someone/I played my part/Kept you in the dark/Now let me show you the shape of my heart
“Jesus Happened,” Baylor Wilson
Country artist turned Christian artist, Baylor Wilson shares the story of her powerful personal transformation on debut single, “Jesus Happened.” With such a bold debut into the music industry, I’m excited to see where this young woman’s career will take her.
Standout Lyrics: Jesus happened/In a blink of an eye/Every part of my life was changed/Jesus happened/Like a thief in the night/He started taking the lies away/And all my sin was forgiven/The moment I met His gracе/That’s when I started living/And all that my heart can say is/Jеsus happened
“If You’re Reading This,” Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw sings a poignant song about war and loss on his emotional track, “If You’re Reading This.” In observance of Memorial Day, I dedicate this song to all the members of the U.S. military and their families, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for your service.
Standout Lyrics: If you’re reading this/My Momma’s sitting there/Looks like I only got a one way ticket over here/Sure wish I/Could give you one more kiss/And war was just a game we played when we were kids/I’m laying down my gun/I’m hanging up my boots/I’m up here with God and we’re both watching over you
And that’s a wrap on my April/May picks. Listen to them on Spotify and let me know what you think. Also feel free to share what tunes you’ve had on repeat the last couple months. Until next time…live, laugh, love, and listen to some awesome music!
