Yellowstone star Luke Grimes is writing country music.

The actor who plays Kayce Dutton on the hit Paramount series was recently photographed with famed Nashville songwriters Ben Hayslip and Jessi Alexander. Alexander actually posted the photo to her Instagram feed and shared that the trio had worked on a song together.

“I was the lucky girl that got to make up a song today with these boys🙏🏼✍️💙,” Alexander said, tagging both Hayslip and Grimes in the post. She later added the hashtags, “#notkayce #countryandwestern #nashville songwriter #dreamjob #yellowstonefangirl🙋🏼‍”

Grimes is not a stranger to music. He used to play drums for Mitchells Folly, an alt-country band based in Los Angeles, according to American Songwriter. In addition, Grimes is credited as a writer on a song called, “Reckless Road,” which was written for the pilot episode of Outlaw Country (2012), also according to the outlet.

The show was picked up by FX, but the network later dropped it and aired it as a movie instead, Deadline reported.

Grimes shared more information about his country music career and his time drumming with Mitchells Folly in a Jan. 5th interview with Rolling Stone.

Grimes said that he didn’t just play drums in the band, he also got to write songs:

“It was around that time when the alt-country thing was really going on. Wilco and Ryan Adams were really big then and we were kind of like that,” Grimes explained. “I played guitar too and helped write songs for the band, so I got to be more than just the drummer. It was a cool experience,” he added.

Rolling Stone indicated that Grimes is working with Range Media Partners to launch his country music career. Along with representing Grimes for film and television, they also work with his Yellowstone co-star Ryan Bingham as well as country artists Midland and Hailey Whitters, according to the outlet.

In the interview, Grimes cited Colter Wall, Ruston Kelly, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard as artists whose music he listens to. In terms of songwriting process, Grimes said he plans to “co-write” songs. He also records demos into his phone and shares them with friends who are musicians, Rolling Stone reported.

Grimes is in good hands working with the likes of Alexander and Hayslip. Alexander has written songs such as Lee Brice’s “I Drive Your Truck,” Blake Shelton’s “Mine Would Be You,” and Miley Cyrus‘ “The Climb,” according to her bio. Hayslip also boasts impressive writing credits, including Luke Bryan‘s “Huntin,’ Fishin,’ & Lovin’ Every Day,” Martina McBride‘s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It,” and Jason Aldean’s “The Only Way I Know.”

And while Grimes is busy working on his music, that doesn’t mean he’s done with TV. Season 5 of Yellowstone begins filming in May, according to Deadline.
