Joe Alwyn recently shared whether he has any future plans to write more songs with his country turned pop superstar girlfriend, Taylor Swift, and I was honestly a little disappointed in his answer.
In an April 19 interview with ELLE, Alwyn said he doesn’t foresee he and girlfriend, Swift collaborating again musically.
“It’s not a plan of mine [to write more songs with Taylor], no,” Alwyn shared.
Alwyn teamed up with his famous girlfriend to write a variety of tracks for her folklore and evermore albums (both released in 2020), including “exile,” her duet with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, “betty,” and “champagne problems.” Alwyn was credited on the albums using the pseudonym, William Bowery. In addition, Alwyn was recognized for his work in co-producing a handful of tracks on folklore when Swift took home the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2021.
Swift discussed writing songs with her actor boyfriend in folklore: the long pond studio sessions, a documentary streaming on Disney+.
“So William Bowery is Joe, as we know,” Swift said in a clip of the documentary where she is joined by her other two album collaborators, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.
Swift then proceeded to share that Alwyn plays the piano and is always singing. He actually came up with Vernon’s part of the duet on “exile,” she said.
In addition, Swift explained how she and Alwyn decided to write songs together.
Swift said she heard Alwyn singing the “fully formed chorus of [folklore song] ‘betty’ from another room” and decided to ask him if they could finish the song together.
“It was a step that we would never have taken because why would we have ever written a song together?” Swift shared in a second clip from the documentary.
“This is the first time we had a conversation where I came in and I was like, ‘Hey. This could be really weird and we could hate this, so could we just, because we’re in quarantine [due to the COVID-19 pandemic], and there’s nothing else going on, can we just try to see what it’s like if we write this song together?” Swift continued.
Alwyn told the Wall Street Journal why he chose the pseudonym “William Bowery” to use as his name on his songwriting credits. William is a tribute to his great-grandfather and composer, William Alwyn, whereas, Bowery comes from the downtown New York area where he spent much of his time when he first came to the U.S., according to the outlet.
And while Alwyn doesn’t have plans to continue writing songs with Swift, there’s been speculation that the couple is about to take on another adventure: marriage.
Alwyn also responded to rumors that he and Swift are engaged in the Wall Street Journal piece, telling the outlet he wouldn’t be sharing any information about his supposed engagement, whether Swift’s answer was “yes” or “no.”
“I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say,” Alwyn shared. “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins,” he added.
Alwyn’s latest project is starring in the Hulu series, Conversations With Friends.
