Taylor Swift graduated with a honorary doctorate from New York University (NYU) Wednesday (May 18). In addition, Swift delivered the commencement address for the class of 2022.
Swift’s management team, Taylor Nation announced that the country-turned-pop superstar would receive the distinguished honor in a tweet on March 28.
Swift received her honorary doctorate of fine arts from Jason King, chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
Prior to the ceremony, Swift posted a video of herself to her TikTok account where she donned her cap and gown, writing, “see you soon NYU.”
Later, during the commencement procession, Swift waved to adoring fans from the class of 2022 who were gathered for the festivities at Yankee Stadium.
Swift also delivered a 27-minute commencement address, where she joked she was 90% sure she’d been invited to partake in the festivities because “[she] has a song called, ’22.’”

Prior to delivering her speech, Swift received an academic hood, which signified the honorary degree had been conferred upon her.
During a 2016 edition of “73 Questions” with Vogue, Swift shared she really wanted an honorary doctorate degree because her pal and fellow singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran had one and she jokingly said she felt “he looked down on her” as a result.
It’s safe to say that that’s no longer an issue given the honor Swift received today.
In addition to awarding Swift her honorary doctorate degree, NYU’s Clive Davis Institute taught a course on the singer this year from Jan. 26 to March 9.
Congratulations to all the graduates from NYU’s Class of 2022 and to Honorary Doctor Taylor Swift!
