Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez teamed up to sing Cyrus’ hit single, “7 Things” together back at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards.
Cyrus, who also hosted that year, opened the award show with her angsty breakup song about her ex and Jonas Brothers band member, Nick Jonas. Cyrus kicked off the performance on the award show stage before walking into the crowd.
At one point, Cyrus made her way over to where Gomez was sitting and the fellow Disney Channel actress/singer joined in on the final line of the second chorus.
The moment was monumental as the teen queens had allegedly feuded over both dating the youngest Jonas Brother.
Cyrus had described Jonas as her “first love,” writing about their relationship in her 2009 memoir, Miles To Go. She also described the process of writing “7 Things” in the book.
“I was angry when I wrote ‘7 Things,’” she said. I wanted to punish him, to get back at him for hurting me. It starts with a list of what I ‘hate.’ But I’m not a hater. My heart knew from the start that it was going to turn into a love song.”
“Why does he get a love song? Because I don’t hate him. I won’t let myself hate anybody,” she continued. “That’s not the way my heart works. It’s a song about how I should hate him, but I don’t, and I don’t know why. It’s about forgiving not forgetting.”
“Here’s what I feel: It’s hard to imagine that our love is a story with an end. But you know, at least I’m getting some good songs out of it.”
In the song’s accompanying music video, Cyrus sports Jonas’ diabetes dog tag–which he gave her–and holds up a photo of the two of them that has his face covered.
Despite their breakup, Cyrus and Jonas eventually got back together. (Fun fact: They even wrote a song about their relationship called “Before The Storm”). Jonas actually went back and forth between dating Cyrus and Gomez, fellow Disney Channel alum, Demi Lovato revealed during her and Jonas’ 2016 episode of Carpool Karaoke.
Much of Cyrus’ early musical catalog is inspired by her relationship with Jonas, including songs such as “Right Here” (Meet Miley Cyrus, 2007), “Full Circle” (Breakout, 2008), “Goodbye” (Breakout, 2008), “Stay” (Can’t Be Tamed, 2010), and “Take Me Along” (Can’t Be Tamed, 2010).
Cyrus has also continued to perform “7 Things” live over the years, changing the song’s lyrics whenever she seemed to be upset with Jonas. (On one occasion, Cyrus even ripped a fan’s picture of her and Jonas from the “7 Things” music video).
More recently, Cyrus also called out a fan’s sign during Lollapalooza 2022 in Santiago de Chile that read, “F–k Nick Jonas.”
“I didn’t say it. I didn’t say it, it’s just one of the other signs,” Cyrus explained.
Following her split from Jonas, Cyrus went on to marry her The Last Song co-star-turned-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth but the pair divorced shortly afterward. Meanwhile, Jonas is married to actress, Priyanka Chopra.
